Marnus Labuschagne Omitted from Australia's One-Day International Lineup Against India
The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from the three-match ODI series against India, with in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a surprise inclusion.
Recent Form Lead to Omission
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI squad following scoring just one run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a top score of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI batting appearances.
Labuschagne has featured in 68 one-day internationals and amassed 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Changes
Labuschagne has shown signs of a improvement in form with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the forthcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a return to the Test team as Australia seek a solution to their batting top-order problems.
Pace Additions and Injury Updates
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after taking a break since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he works to regain fitness from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Fixtures
Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from 29 October.
