{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences near miss with F1 marshals
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals crossed the track right in his path
The dangerous situation took place on the third lap when safety workers were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an quick visit to the pits to change his broken nose section
Racer's Instant Response
Shortly afterward, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals sprinting across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was so dangerous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown at some point but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a live track marshals can be allowed to just dash across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was notified that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the governing body
"On lap three, safety personnel were alerted and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once every vehicle had gone by"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the directives to deploy marshals were canceled and a caution signal was displayed in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what occurred following that moment"
