Federal Government Ready to Dispatch Numerous Government Officers to the Bay Area

The Trump administration appeared poised on Wednesday to deploy scores of government officers to the northern California for a large-scale crackdown on immigration, triggering outrage from California leaders.

Details of the Deployment

Specifics of the operation were continuing to unfold, but it will reportedly involve over a hundred government officers, according to reports. The officers are reportedly set to begin occupying the military installation in Alameda, across the bay from San Francisco. It was still uncertain whether military personnel would participate.

Official Backlash

The operation comes after weeks of warnings by the president to take action against the liberal city. California’s governor Gavin Newsom condemned the move, labeling it “straight from the authoritarian playbook”.

“He deploys unidentified officers, he deploys customs officers, he sends out immigration officials, he generates worry and terror in the community so that he can claim credit for solving that by sending in the national guard,” Newsom said. “This mirrors the arsonist fighting the inferno.”

City Preparation

San Francisco is the newest metropolitan center singled out by the administration's initiative of large-scale detentions. The mission is likely to cause a standoff between the White House and city officials who have pledged to prevent armed border control in the city.

San Franciscans have been preparing for months for Trump to fulfill repeated threats to send troops to the city. At a Wednesday media briefing, San Francisco’s municipal chief emphasized that the city was ready.

“During this period, we have been anticipating the likelihood of some kind of federal deployment in our city,” stated the official, explaining that he had enacted new policies on Wednesday to “enhance the city’s protection of our immigrant communities, and ensure our departments are organized prior to any government operation.”

Legal Background

Regardless of judicial disputes to deployments in a several municipalities, including Illinois, the Pacific Northwest and LA, Trump has declared “complete control” to send the military forces in cities, pointing to the federal statute which permits presidents specific authority to dispatch personnel on domestic land.

Public Preparation

The governor, who was formerly as San Francisco’s city leader – had pledged to step in “without delay” to a mission in the city. “The concept that the federal government can send forces into our cities with no legitimate cause grounded in reality, no oversight, no answerability, no respect for state sovereignty – it constitutes an attack on the judicial framework,” he said on Wednesday.

Local organizations, including civil rights groups established during the initial federal leadership, have organized to rapidly assemble a mass rally in the city, as well as peaceful assemblies at local libraries.

Local Effect

In San Francisco’s Mission area, a largely Hispanic neighborhood, elected official stated to media last week she and her constituents had been anticipating this time. “The time that workers cease employment, when people of color can’t freely walk outside without the apprehension of Trump’s federal agents discriminating against and apprehending them, the moment when parents stop sending kids to school, become too afraid to go to the supermarket or medical provider,” she said. “Our ongoing preparations in the Mission is basically a shutdown the likes of which we haven’t seen since the health crisis.”

State Troops Status

Approximately 300 out of several thousand state military personnel stay under federal control under an directive from Trump. Roughly two hundred of them had been transferred to the neighboring state, where they were staying in standby in the midst of a court case over their assignment.

This week, Newsom said he had called the local soldiers under his authority to manage food banks amid the government shutdown.
