Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Irish Selection While Joe McCarthy Misses Out
Returning manager Andy Farrell has selected captain Caelan Doris in his Irish squad for the fall internationals, however lock McCarthy is absent.
The captain, absent from play since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.
Second row Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the opening Lions match against Australia in July.
Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Nash are not included because of fitness concerns, and number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery after the summer tour.
Dublin province prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-man squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union says new provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "backup".
Following playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous meeting, the team will play Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced players and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and the Lobos," said the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a mostly familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will again compete for the first-choice fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is still available, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first time in Saturday's United Rugby Championship game at Croke Park.
Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen as the coach opting against selecting the province's Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer international victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the youngster is additionally a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at full-back.
Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.
McCarthy is the only new name in the Irish pack. The front rower has started two of his province's URC United Rugby Championship matches so far and featured in the second string's defeat by the English in the English city previously.
The 22-year-old was included in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a cap.
Southern province second row Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is retained, and veteran Ulster second row Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.
Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to cover for Doris should the captain does not regain full fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.
The national team will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on the following day.
