EU Maritime Forces Free Crew Following Somalia Piracy Incident on Vessel

The Maltese-flagged tanker was captured by pirates on Thursday

EU maritime units have safely freed 24 sailors from a Maltese-flagged petroleum vessel that was targeted by sea robbers off the shoreline of Somalia.

The vessel, which was transporting petrol from India to South African destinations, was seized on the recent incident when heavily armed attackers opened fire with machine guns and explosive projectiles before boarding the vessel.

All sailors locked themselves inside a fortified citadel while the pirates took control of the marine transport.

Mission Accomplished

A naval vessel, operating under the European Union's maritime security operation, reached the ship on Friday afternoon. Elite military units entered the vessel and found all two dozen sailors safe and sound.

"All personnel is safe and no harm have been reported. During the ordeal, they remained in the citadel in direct contact with the operation," officials stated, noting that a "show of force" had convinced the attackers to abandon the vessel before the naval unit reached the location.

Continuing Danger

Authorities added that the danger level in the region "remains critical" as the armed groups are still in the area.

The mission utilized a aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicle and reconnaissance plane. Just hours earlier, a different vessel in the same area was approached by a small speedboat but managed to evade it.

Resurgence of Piracy

This incident marks the most recent in a series of incidents that have created concern about a resurgence of piracy in the area.

Piracy operations had decreased when global maritime security and protective protocols were implemented after peaking more than a ten years past.

However, attacks by militant groups on ships in the Arabian Sea, which have been carried out for the past two years, have led vessels to be rerouted through the African coastline - creating new possibilities for local pirate groups.

Statistical Overview

  • Seven reported incidents of piracy took place off the shoreline of the Somali region in the previous year
  • Several vessel takeovers were recorded among these events
  • Only one incident of maritime crime was reported in 2023

Industry professionals are closely watching the developments as shipping companies navigate these potentially hazardous waters.
