British Foreign Office has included an additional eleven more nations to its travel alert register regarding the threats of methanol poisoning from tainted alcoholic drinks.

The expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a global increase in the incidence of reported cases" of toxic alcohol toxicity.

Only a few weeks ago, officials had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, following several serious incidents such as the tragic death of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being advised that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can result in blindness or loss of life within 12 to 48 hours.

What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?

Methanol is a poisonous substance often utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not designed for drinking.

While it is naturally produced during the production of spirits, commercial firms lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the refining procedure.

Yet in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to save money, and since it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to identify.

Authorities' Advice for Tourists

Government representative a senior official said that all travellers should be aware of the indicators of methanol toxicity.

"When you are consuming alcohol abroad, choose trusted places and steer clear of local brews or unspecified beverages," the official warned.

"In case something seems unusual, such as a headache that's much more severe than usual or sight issues – contact a doctor right away."

The entire roster of countries listed as presenting a danger of methanol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
